Okul kütüphanesine kitap bağışladı, cezadan kurtuldu
         A trend-setting mediation, one hopes.

In Adana a traffic dispute ended up making some students very
happy.  On 1 July, construction engineer Serkan Kocagöz chastised
driver Ş.A. because he was going the wrong way.  This resulted in
a fist fight between the two.

Kocagöz hurt his arm in the fight and filed a complaint about Ş.A.
In court Kocagöz said he would drop the complaint if Ş.A. agreed
to donate books to the Çobanoğlu Commercial High School.  Ş.A.
was willing and sent 112 copies of Turkish and world classics to the
school.  As a result Ş.A. avoided a possible 5 year prison sentence.

Pes dedirten uygulama: Ding-dong kilise çanına benziyor…
"Next thing you know, they'll make priests train conductors!"

Up to now, on the Ankara-Konya high-speed train and in the waiting
room, announcements have been preceded by a 'ding-dong'
sound.  Some passengers, however, found the sound offensive,
saying "this noise sounds like church bells. Remove it!"

The TCDD (Turkish Railway Authority) heeded the complaints and
has removed the 'ding-dong' sound.  TCDD officials confirmed the
account, explaining that "the sound was making some of our
customers uncomfortable and spooking children.  So we decided
to erase the sound from the trains and the waiting room. The
announcements will begin with a human voice."

He's the black sheep of the family anyway.

In Çukurova district of Adana an incident occurred last Friday that
put police on the alert.  A tip came in that there was an armed person
wearing a 'karaçarşaf' (woman's black outdoor overgarment) walking
rapidly on the street where the police chief's home and the Army
House are located.

Police were able to identify the suspect as Cemil Ç. (22) who, when
taken into custody, explained that "my future father-in-law said that
I can't see my fiancé before we get married so I decided to put on a
'karaçarşaf' and go to the beauty salon where by fiancé B.K. works.
That's when the police spotted me." B.K. confirmed Cemil Ç.'s story.

Apartman üstü cami
                   That much closer to God.

In Keçiören district of Ankara, the architecture of the Esentepe
Yeni Camii (mosque) on Ahmet Şefik Kolaylı Avenue has amazed
onlookers.  The building is still under construction but the mosque
sits on top of the 6-story apartment building.

Mosque officials stated that Koran courses will be held in some
of the other floors.  Local residents remarked that "this is the
first time we've seen a mosque on top of a building."
