The "Anabasis War Road" ia located in Trabzon's Maçka province
and was written about by Xenophon in his Anabasis Journey Log
in 400 B.C.  According to what Xenophon wrote, Persian Prince
Cyrus left Sardes (today's Izmir) in Lidya with 10,000 mercenaries
and went to the Cunaxa region of Syria to fight his brother King
Artaxerxes.

In the battle at Cunaxa Cyrus and his generals were killed so the
mercenaries, in a foreign land 2,400 kilometers from their home,
travelled through Armenia to a hill at Maçka's İskopel summer
pasture - Theches Hill - from where they joyfully saw the Black
Sea.

The path the mercenaries took is now open to tourists. In 2013
the Maçka district chief's office together with academicians from
Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon prepared a map for
tourists to follow the "Anabasis War Road".  The road links a
number of tourism spots, such as Altındere National Park, the
Sümela Monastery, Çakırgöl, the Santa ruins, Antique Krom
Kenti and Taşköprü summer pasture.  Since 2013 between 600
and 700 tourists had come to see the historic and natural treasures.
