...and penmanship counts!
In Adana, a bus driver who charged an elderly woman, the
mother of a 'şehit' (martyr/fallen soldier), even though she had a
free pass, now faces 11 years in prison for "publicly inciting
people to hatred and enmity", "publicly disparaging a portion
of the public" and "misusing the public trust".
Driver Eren Güngör was released but the judge ordered him
to go to the police station each day at 12:33 (!) and sign under
a plaque that shows the words of the Turkish National Anthem
and, specifically, to write out the sixth stanza, which relates to
fallen soldiers.
The reason the judge specified "12:33" as the time for Güngör
to sign and write each day is that the son of Zübeyde Tura (60)
was killed in a battle in Bingöl province, which has the license
number 12, and in which 33 soldiers lost their lives. In response
to his penalty, driver Güngör said "I regret it very much."
The battle with the PKK occurred in 1993 in Bingöl.
